Laos – Viet Dhaab
General specification
ดาบลาว — Laos Dhaab
Type #1 — Standard Profile (Available Now)
A wider blade with a broadened front section designed for powerful, authoritative cuts. The blade tapers progressively toward the spine to balance the weight forward — keeping the sword fast and responsive despite its cutting mass. This is the fuller expression of the Lao fighting sword: presence and speed in one form.
Type #2 — Slim Profile (Coming Soon)
A slimmer blade with a clean, Katana-like kissaki tip and narrower base — reflecting the Lao-Vietnamese border tradition where blade forms grew leaner and more refined. Smaller in visual presence than Type #1, but equally powerful and fast in the cut. A sword that rewards precision as much as force.
Basic Model — ฿26,000 (Basic Laos fitting)
Fuller and stamped pattern blade · Round handle · Basic Laos-Viet bronze fitting (Clear or Darkened) With silk wrap scabbard
Premium Model — ฿28,000 – 34,000 (Premium Laos Fitting)

The Story
To understand the Laos Dhaab, you have to understand a people who were among the most respected blade smiths in all of Southeast Asia.
Lao smiths were considered some of the finest in the region, and many migrated into Thailand over the centuries, settling in areas such as Chiang Mai, Lampang, Uttaradit, Ayutthaya, and Nakhon Si Thammarat — carrying their knowledge of steel and their blade traditions with them. During the early Rattanakosin period, Lao smiths who settled around Ayutthaya became so prolific that their steel products dominated the market, sold under the name Aranyik — and what we recognise today as the Thai Dhaab is, in many ways, the Lao sword tradition absorbed into Thai culture.
The Laos Dhaab itself is not a single, fixed design. Across the Mekong basin — through Laos, northeastern Thailand, and into the borderlands with Vietnam — smiths working in related traditions produced blades that shared a common character while varying in profile, proportion, and finish. The Lao daab is characterised by a spine with significant curve, and blades that often feature detailed carving and tooling — but what truly sets these swords apart from other regional types is what happens at the handle. Where Thai and Burmese swords tend toward simpler wrapped grips, the Lao tradition developed distinctive cast metal fittings — guard and pommel — that gave the sword a more formal, finished appearance without sacrificing its fighting character.
Antique Laos daab were commonly found hung by the front door of households throughout Southeast Asia, often decorated with coins at their ends — a sword that was both a weapon and a household protector, with spiritual significance beyond its function in battle.
The blade form also shows traces of cross-border influence. Swords from the Laos-Vietnam borderlands reveal a shared heritage — slimmer profiles, cleaner geometry, and in some examples a pointed kissaki-like tip that echoes contact with Vietnamese and even distant Chinese blade traditions, filtered through the hands of Lao smiths into something distinctly their own.
The Siamese Edge Laos Dhaab
Our Laos Dhaab is developed from close study of antique originals — blades from Laos and the Lao-Viet border tradition that we have handled, measured, and learned from directly. The goal was to understand what made these swords work: the blade geometry, the balance, the way the handle fits in the hand.
The blade is forged from SK4 high-carbon steel with differential heat treatment — edge hardened for cutting performance while the spine retains enough flexibility to absorb impact. Two blade profiles are offered, each drawing from a different corner of the Lao sword tradition.
The handle is wrapped in cotton thread and treated with natural lacquer — firm, light, and superior in grip. The fittings are cast bronze in the Laos-Viet style, available in clear or darkened finish — replicas of the distinctive guard and pommel forms that set this sword apart from its Thai and Burmese cousins.
