The Story

The Tai Lue — ไทลื้อ — are one of the oldest Tai-speaking peoples in Southeast Asia. Their name means Northern Tai, a reflection of their origins in Sipsongpanna (Xishuangbanna), the ancient kingdom straddling the upper Mekong River in what is now southern Yunnan, China. The royal house of Sipsongpanna maintained an unbroken family line since 1180 — a civilisation of rice farmers, weavers, and craftspeople who built one of the most culturally refined societies in the highland Mekong world.

Over centuries, waves of Tai Lue migrated south — some forcibly resettled by the kings of Lanna who prized their skills, others fleeing upheaval — eventually settling across northern Thailand in provinces such as Nan, Chiang Rai, Phayao, and Chiang Mai. Wherever they went, they carried their traditions with them. The Tai Lue became renowned across the north for two things above all others: their intricate textile weaving, and their silversmithing. Silversmithing is deeply embedded in Tai Lue culture — a craft that not only sustained communities economically but expressed identity, status, and artistry.

It is from this silversmithing tradition that the Tai Lue sword draws its most distinctive character. While other regional swords were defined primarily by their blades, the Tai Lue sword was also defined by what surrounded it — fully silver-clad handles, engraved and worked with the same precision the Tai Lue applied to their ceremonial bowls, jewelry, and temple offerings. A Tai Lue sword in full silver dress was not just a weapon. It was a declaration of who made it, and who carried it.

The blade itself is equally distinctive — double-edged with a central ridge running the full length, giving it a profile unlike any other sword in the Southeast Asian tradition. Where most regional blades are single-edged cutters, the Tai Lue dha is built to cut in both directions and thrust with a sharp, penetrating point — a fighting geometry that rewards a different kind of skill.

Our Tai Lue Dha is based on antique originals — studied closely for their blade geometry, balance, and handle construction before a single piece was forged.

The blade is forged from SK4 high-carbon steel with differential heat treatment — edge hardened on both edges while the spine retains enough flexibility for real use. The double-edged profile with central ridge is forged to period geometry: widened toward the front for cutting impact, tapering toward the base for balance and speed, terminating in a sharp pointed tip capable of a deep, committed thrust. The result is a blade that is moderate in weight — not heavy, not light — fast in the hand, and hits harder than its profile suggests.
