The Story

The Tai Lue are known for two things above all others: the precision of their weaving and the refinement of their silversmithing. These were not separate crafts — they came from the same cultural instinct, the same attention to pattern, rhythm, and the accumulated knowledge of what happens when a skilled hand works a material to its limit. The Tai Lue sword tradition carries both of these things in its construction. The blade is built for fighting. The silver is built to last generations.

This piece begins with an antique sword from a private collection — a Tai Lue double-edged blade in full silver dress, a form rarely encountered outside of museum holdings and the hands of serious collectors. We studied it closely. The silver work on the original was not the dense repoussé relief of the court tradition, but something quieter and in its own way more technically demanding: fine silver wire laid by hand directly onto the scabbard surface in flowing decorative patterns, the wire following the curve of the body, building up a surface that reads differently at every angle of light. Alongside it, tightly coiled wire wrapping on the handle — continuous, even, dense — the same technique taken to a different expression.

We did not attempt to reproduce the original exactly. That was never the intention. What we wanted was to work in the same spirit — to understand the technique well enough to produce something that belongs in the same conversation as the antique, made now, with the same quality of attention.

The result is a sword that carries the Tai Lue identity in its surface and its steel — a double-edged blade of genuine fighting capability dressed in silver work that connects it to one of the most refined craft traditions in the highland world.

The Sword

The blade is double-edged with a pronounced central ridge running the full length — the geometry that defines the Tai Lue fighting form. The profile widens toward the front for cutting authority, then tapers cleanly to a sharp centred tip. This is a blade that cuts in both directions and commits fully to the thrust. Slim in the hand, it carries more force than its profile suggests — the ridge and the widened geometry working together to drive the edge through the cut with a consistency that narrower blades cannot match.

The blade is forged from SK4 high-carbon steel with differential heat treatment — the same proven foundation as everything else we make. The silver dress sits alongside that performance, not in place of it. This sword can be used. It has been made to that standard.

The Silver Work

The handle is wrapped entirely in densely coiled fine silver wire — continuous from collar to pommel, wound so tightly that the surface reads almost as woven cloth. There is no gap, no loose end, no point where the attention lapses. The pommel cap is plain and rounded, letting the wire work close the handle without competing with it. At the collar, braided silver wire bands mark the transition from handle to scabbard mouth — a detail taken directly from the antique reference.

The scabbard is wood core clad in plain brushed silver, its surface carrying the decorative wire filigree patterning that is the most distinctive feature of this piece. The wire is laid by hand in flowing patterns along the body — not stamped, not cast, but placed individually, following the curve of the scabbard as it sweeps from throat to tip. A small rosette medallion marks the mid-point. The result is a surface that rewards looking at closely — the kind of work that reveals more the longer you spend with it.

The silver on this sword is a different language from the repoussé work on the Dhaab Plai Bua. That piece speaks in figures and density. This one speaks in line, rhythm, and restraint — the wire work calligraphic in character, the plain silver of the scabbard body giving it room to breathe.
