The Story

The Dhaab Dang is one of Thailand’s most enduring blades — a weapon that has seen continuous use from the Ayutthaya period through to the present day. Its name tells its purpose: Dhaab (sword) and Dang (shield) — a sword designed to be carried alongside a shield, issued as a personal sidearm to soldiers of the Royal Army who specialised in both land and naval warfare.

What sets the Dhaab Dang apart from other Thai swords is its distinctive design philosophy. The blade is heavier and broader than most, yet kept deliberately short — a balance born from the realities of combat. On open ground, the weight delivers devastating cutting power. On the deck of a warship, the shorter length keeps the blade nimble and manageable in the chaos of close-quarters fighting. It could cut through flesh, sever rope, and cleave through the harder materials encountered in naval engagements — all within the same stroke.

Beyond the battlefield, the Dhaab Dang held deep cultural significance. It appeared in royal processions and ceremonies, serving as a symbol of rank and martial identity. To this day, it remains a ceremonial presence in Thai royal traditions. For collectors, it is prized for its rarity, its history, and the sheer authority of its form.

The blade is forged from SK4 high-carbon steel — trusted for its toughness, edge retention, and reliability — shaped into the classic หัวโต้ (Hua Toa) broad profile that made this sword legendary. The weight is deliberate. The geometry is purposeful. The angled tip retains full thrusting capability while the heavy spine does what it was always meant to do — cut with authority.

The handle is crafted from Rosewood, warm in the hand and built to last, paired with our original Siamese Edge fittings in your choice of Bronze or Copper — each hand-fitted and finished to complement the blade’s character. Each sword comes complete with a matching Rosewood scabbard.
