Example of Antique Handle Construction
The most design in Thailand dating from Ayuthaya period into early Rattanakosin Dynasty. The design was usually made and given to official with decorative pattern design , motif, and inlays. The more intricate design indicate higher status and rank.
The Story
The ดาบหลวง — literally the Royal Sword or Noble Sword — is among the most culturally significant blades in Thai history. In the records of royal service, this sword is listed as the Daab Luang — a blade of the Ayutthaya school of smiths, distinguished by its relatively straight blade profile with substantial thickness, and a handle fitted with auspicious symbols. It was not simply a weapon — it was a statement of office.
Issued to officials, nobles, and high-ranking members of the royal court from the Ayutthaya through to the Rattanakosin period, the ดาบหลวง carried meaning beyond its steel. The handle fittings were designed in the form of lotus leaves — a deliberate choice. The lotus, rooted in mud yet rising above the water immaculate, is one of the most powerful symbols in Thai Buddhist culture — representing purity, virtue, and justice. A sword given with lotus fittings was a reminder to those who carried it: you serve the people, not yourself.
The more intricate the decoration — the more precious metal used, the finer the inlays, the more elaborate the motifs — the higher the rank of the person who wore it. The blade itself was functional and built for war, but the fittings told the story of the person who wore it.
This design remained in continuous use across both the Ayutthaya and Rattanakosin courts, and antique examples are among the most sought-after pieces in Thai sword collecting today.
The Siamese Edge Ayuthaya Noble Dhaab
Our approach to this sword began with research — studying antique examples to understand not just what these swords looked like, but the thinking behind their construction. The blade geometry, the handle proportions, the way the fittings sit — all of it traced back to the originals before a single piece was made.
The blade is forged from SK4 high-carbon steel with differential heat treatment, giving the edge sharpness and retention while the spine remains tough. The handle is wrapped in braided cotton and finished with natural lacquer — the same method used on historical examples — giving a grip that is firm, durable, and true to the antique construction.
The fittings are cast replicas of the original Ayutthaya lotus-leaf style, available in Bronze or Nickel Silver, each in your choice of clear or darkened finish. The scabbard is finished in natural lacquer with bronze fittings — drawn directly from period examples.
